Growth of bacterial cultures is defined as an increase in the number of bacteria in a population rather than in the size of individual cells. The growth of a bacterial population occurs in a geometric or exponential manner: with each division cycle (generation), one cell gives rise to 2 cells, then 4 cells, then 8 cells, then 16, then 32, and so forth. The rate of growth of a bacterial culture is oftern described by the time required for the number of cells to increase by a factor of 2, or the DOUBLING TIME or GENERATION TIME, g.
