Control charts are designed to measure variation in processes, including common cause variation and special cause variation. Common cause variation is considered normal, random variation within a process, while special cause variation is due to broken machinery or some other process defect. One of the important advantages of using control charts in managing a production operation is that the control chart tells you when to take corrective action on the process being controlled. For example if one task is completed in 3 days and another one in 5 days and other one is in 28 days then you should map those lead times into a visual environment in order to detect abnormalities. Here control chart comes into play. Which type of Control Chart? Variable data: how large are the subgroups? If the subgroup size is one, then use an Individual measurements chart, with or without a moving R chart. If the subgroup size is from two to ten (or possibly twelve), then use an X and R chart.
