The figures behind the oil and gas industry in the United States are impressive. In 1999, the US produced 7.7 million barrels of oil per day and this grew to almost 9 million in 2012. In 2018, the amount of energy produced in the United States was equal to about 95.7 quads, which was equal to about 95% of total U.S. energy consumption, the largest share since 1967. Net imports of crude oil accounted for the majority of the difference between total primary energy production and total primary energy consumption in 2018.
