The concept of using aquifers for natural gas storage was first demonstrated in the United States by Louisville Gas and Electric Company with the development  storage. Naturally occurring underground formations, such as depleted oil and gas reservoirs, aquifers and salt caverns provide the most effective means to  15 Jan 2013 Instead it's typically stored in one of three underground facilities: depleted reservoir, salt cavern, and aquifer. A depleted reservoir (D) is just as it

Aquifers account for about 4% of gas storage capacity nationwide, with most in the Midwest. Aquifers are permeable rock formations that contain natural, underground sources of water of varying quality and quantity. They can be converted for gas storage by injecting gas at high pressures, with both water and the rock overlay serving as containment. Aquifers In some areas, most notably the Midwest, natural aquifers have been converted to gas storage reservoirs. An aquifer is suitable for gas storage if the water bearing sedimentary rock formation is overlaid with an impermeable cap rock. While the geology is similar to a depleted production field, Natural gas storage is important for ensuring that natural gas is available when demand increases. There are 415 storage sites—including underground caverns and depleted aquifers and oil and gas reservoirs—located in 31 states, often near population centers (see fig.). During operation of natural gas storage aquifers and reservoirs precipitation of dissolved salts can occur near as well as in the wellbore, if saline groundwater is present. This may reduce the wellbore performance drastically and causes considerable problems. Halite formation occurs during injection of dry gas as well The dry-type (brine-free) gas storage cavern operates between a maximum and minimum gas storage pressure, with the gas volume between these two pressures being usable storage gas. Natural gas is stored at a maximum pressure of 4,000 psia. Aquifer reservoirs are natural water-bearing formations, also converted to gas storage, and represent roughly 9 percent of the total working gas capacity in the United States. Solution-mined salt caverns (salt domes) are geological formations that leached out of salt deposits. All owners and operators of underground storage facilities used for the storage of natural gas, as defined in 49 CFR part 192, are required to submit annual reports. PHMSA published a Federal Register Notice (FRN) announcing the OMB approval of this requirement.

In the United States, 16% of storage capacity is in aquifers. Aquifers are underground porous, permeable rock formations that act as natural water reservoirs. An

25 Mar 2019 To create a UGS in an aquifer of an anticline structure, a natural reservoir is needed with a reliable cap that can seal an artificial gas reservoir  We then introduce the natural gas storage activities in Germany (Section 3). It is dominated by depleted gas and oil fields, but aquifers and salt caverns also. of storage capacity is in aquifers. But because of the importance of aquifer storage in our area, that is, the Midwest, and because I think that aquifer storage is  depleted reservoirs in oil and/or natural gas fields, aquifers, and salt cavern formations. Some Natural Gas Underground Storage Facilities may have duplicate  12 Feb 2018 Depleted aquifers and salt caverns make up the remaining 19%. Most storage facilities were drilled in the 1970s and earlier and were designed  12 Feb 2020 API RP 1171, “Functional Integrity of Natural Gas Storage in Depleted Hydrocarbon Reservoirs and Aquifer Reservoirs” has recommended  Natural Gas Storage in Basalt Aquifers of the. Storage facilities in a depleted field or aquifer feature large capacities but low flexibility. Injection and extraction of gas are much faster in the storage facilities that were built in rock salt caves (though they are inferior to the UGS facilities built in depleted fields in terms of capacity).
